"Cygnet Sanctuary" captures the colours and textures of the coastal wetland reserve in the little Southern Tasmanian town of Cygnet. This linocut was originally created as part of the "Overwintering Project", a collection of Australian and New Zealand printmaker's visions of migratory shorebird habitats, raising awareness of these often endangered birds. (The Overwintering Project Portfolio is a continuing initiative - check out the website for current exhibitions and other details.)
I love the wetlands at Cygnet, depicted here in winter when the colours of the plant-life are vibrant. Migratory birds are summering elsewhere and the wetlands await their return when the seasons change. I love the colours of the winter landscape and the sky reflected in the still water.
I hand carve the lino block and print with oil based printing ink onto Stonehenge printmakers paper. I hand colour each print individually with watercolour. The edition is limited to 20, with 2 already part of the Overwintering Project. The print image itself is 19cm x 19cm and the paper is larger as pictured. The paper has a deckled/torn edge.
A donation of 25% of each sale of this linocut will be made to the Overwintering Project.
