Gravity

A$1,400.00

‘Gravity’ is a collage from 2024. It was made for the exhibition ‘Latitude’ at the Print Council of Australia Gallery in October 2024. ‘Latitude’ brought together many of the members of the nowhereprint collective, a group of Tasmanian artists who use printmaking processes to make work about our island place. ‘Gravity’ has also been exhibited in New Zealand at Art at Wharepuke for ‘Here & There’, another exhibition by the nowhereprint collective. This piece is well-travelled!

I had been exploring the idea of an equatorial line running through my collages. This line is created by the tearing of the linocut pieces. The line becomes the point of connection but also the space between the pieces. In ‘Gravity’ the line connects a series of rocks both above and below, which appear to be clustered together with alpine plants and hovering in space.

This piece was a favourite at the time I made it. The inspiration came in a flash, and then the collage was tweaked over a week or so to get the lines and shapes just right, before being painted with watercolour. The whole collage is raised off the surface of the background paper via pieces of foam-core cut to shape. The composition hovers above the background by around 5mm and the shadows created are an intended part of the artwork.

This piece is unframed and would suit being float mounted due to its 3 dimensional surface.
