Small World 3
My ‘Small World’ series of collages came about when I began cutting and tearing my linocuts and piecing them back together in new ways. Using the lines and shapes within the linocut, I found ways to connect the pieces. Some grew into other landscapes, some into map-like journeys and some into self-contained nugget shaped ‘planets’. These Small Worlds are lumpy, asteroidal clusters of rock and alpine flora, each with their own personalities. I love that the finished works speak so clearly about the connections that have brought about their creation. There is something so unmistakably Tasmanian about this series.
The whole collage is raised off the surface of the background paper via pieces of foam-core cut to shape. The composition hovers above the background by around 5mm and the shadows created are an intended part of the artwork.
Small World 3 was a finalist in the Henry Jones Art Award 2024 and was exhibited in the exhibition there. It is float mounted and framed in simple classic black with clear glass.
