Grounded, Empty Vessels
This work is a meditation on the beauty of emptiness in its time. This plant is Orites Revolutus, a proteaceae plant common in the alpine environment of kunanyi. I have previously focused on this plant in flower, full of summer splendour. But the beauty of the winter seed pods was my focus here, and the accompanying rocks and leaf litter that surrounds it.
This linocut is part of my ‘Grounded’ series. The work begins by looking down at the ground at my feet when I’m on the mountain. ‘Grounded’ works are a meditation - of the minutiae of plant life, rocks, seeds, and detritus, the unimpressive, the ordinary, an elevation of the lowly. I love the irony of looking down at the lowly in such an elevated, lofty place. A trip to the summit gives me perspective in more ways than by simply looking at the view.
This linocut measures approximately 30cm (12") wide by 40cm (18") high, not including signature. The paper is larger as pictured. Each print is numbered and signed with this being an edition of 5. I print using oil-based printing ink on Stonehenge printmakers paper. Each linocut is then individually hand painted with watercolour.
This unframed linocut will be shipped securely in a mailing cylinder.
